A Bit About Me

Hello, I’m Dr. Sanam Toossi, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker dedicated to creating a therapeutic space where clients feel empowered to express themselves authentically and work toward meaningful change. My practice is grounded in empathy, cultural competence, and a deep respect for each individual’s journey. With my background in school settings and understanding of complex family dynamics, I utilize a strengths-based and person-centered approach to therapy. My goal is to create a supportive and collaborative environment where clients can explore their emotions, build resilience, and foster personal growth. My therapeutic approach is integrative and holistic, combining evidence-based practices (e.g., CBT and DBT) with creative and expressive therapies. I believe that therapy should be a dynamic and evolving process. By fostering a safe and nurturing environment, I encourage clients to explore their inner worlds, confront challenges, and celebrate their strengths.

My experience spans working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including immigrants and newcomers, which has enriched my practice with a deep appreciation for cultural nuances. Being fluent in Farsi allows me to connect with clients more intimately, providing culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate care. As a Queer and Trans Affirming Professional (QTAP), I am committed to providing affirming and inclusive care, ensuring that all clients feel seen, heard, and valued.

My Education & Training

I received my master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania, where I developed a strong foundation in clinical practice and social justice. I pursued my doctoral degree in social work from the University of Kentucky, further honing my skills and deepening my understanding of complex social issues. I am expanding my expertise through specialized training in sand tray and expressive arts therapy. By integrating creative mediums such as art, music, mindfulness, and movement into the therapeutic process, I offer clients an avenue for self-expression and emotional exploration beyond traditional talk therapy methods. These creative approaches can unlock new pathways for healing and self-discovery, making therapy a more enriching and holistic experience.

Where I Practice

I am licensed to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia. I provide in-person therapy and virtual therapy in our Georgetown office for DC and VA clients.
