A Bit About Me
Hello! My name is Dr. Amelia Welch (She/Her). I am a licensed clinical marriage, couples, and family therapist who works with adolescents, adults, couples, and families. My therapeutic approach is integrative, collaborative, and grounded in psychodynamic, humanistic, and systems theories. I frequently incorporate interventions informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS) and the Gottman Method, tailoring treatment to the unique needs, strengths, and goals of each client. I believe meaningful change occurs within the context of a safe, supportive, and authentic therapeutic relationship, and I strive to create a space where clients feel understood, respected, and empowered.
My work is client-centered and feedback-driven, allowing us to co-create a therapeutic process that honors each client's values, experiences, and aspirations. Together, we explore patterns, relationships, and emotional experiences that may be contributing to distress while building insight, resilience, and practical strategies for growth. Whether working with individuals navigating life transitions, couples seeking deeper connection, or families striving for healthier relationships, I approach therapy with curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to helping clients create lasting and meaningful change.
I provide affirming, culturally responsive care and value the diverse identities, backgrounds, and lived experiences that clients bring into the therapy room. My goal is to support clients in developing greater self-awareness, strengthening relationships, enhancing emotional well-being, and moving toward lives that feel more aligned with their values and goals.
I look forward to meeting you and supporting you on your journey!

My Education, Training & Community Involvement
I earned my Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University in 2019, where I completed my clinical internship at The Family Institute in downtown Chicago. I then pursued my doctoral training at Florida State University, completing an internship at the FSU Center for Couple and Family Therapy while earning my Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy.
During my doctoral studies, I authored a dissertation that became the first published review of a controlled, longitudinal study examining the effects of couples mindful self-compassion training on relationship satisfaction. At the same time, I completed additional clinical training at the Relationship and Divorce Counseling Center in Tampa, Florida, further expanding my experience working with individuals and couples navigating relationship challenges. In addition to my clinical work, I continue to serve as an adjunct instructor of record in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at Florida State University, where I contribute to the education and training of future professionals.
Where I Practice
I am licensed in Florida, Maryland, and Virginia and I provide in-person appointments at our Bethesda office.
