Somatic therapy, also known as somatic experiencing, is a body-based approach to healing that recognizes the deep connection between the mind and body in processing stress, trauma, and emotional pain. In addition to exploring emotions, thoughts, and memories, somatic therapy brings awareness to physical sensations and patterns of tension, with the goal of restoring a sense of safety within the body.
Through techniques such as mindful body awareness, pendulation, titration, and resourcing, clients learn to tune into, and release suppressed emotions and regulate their nervous system. During somatic therapy, the client and therapist work collaboratively to increase internal awareness, allowing healing to unfold at the physiological level where difficult memories and intense emotions are often held.
