A Bit About Me

Hello! My name is Dr. Amelia Welch (she/her). I am a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist who works with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. My work is client-centered and feedback-driven, allowing us to co-create a therapeutic process that honors each client's values, experiences, strengths, and goals.

My therapeutic style is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that growth happens through authentic connection. I strive to create a warm, affirming, and nonjudgmental space where clients feel safe to explore their experiences and build on their strengths. Drawing from systems theory, I meet clients where they are while recognizing the relationships, environments, and experiences that influence their lives. Together, we can work toward greater insight, resilience, and meaningful change.

I come to Georgetown Psychology with over 9 years of clinical experience. I draw from a variety of clinical modalities, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I have also completed training in the Gottman Method (Levels 1 & 2), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). I integrate these approaches into my work based on each client’s individual needs, strengths, and goals.

I look forward to meeting you and supporting you on your journey!

My Education, Training & Community Involvement

I am originally from McLean, Virginia, and have returned to the DMV to practice in the area where I was raised. I began studying therapy in graduate school after earning my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latino Studies from Indiana University. I earned my Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University in 2019, where I completed my clinical internship at The Family Institute in downtown Chicago. I then pursued doctoral training at Florida State University, completing an internship at the FSU Center for Couple and Family Therapy while earning my Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy.

I completed additional clinical training at the Relationship and Divorce Counseling Center in Tampa, Florida, where I further expanded my experience supporting individuals and couples as they navigate relationship challenges and transitions. In addition to my clinical work, I continue to serve as an adjunct professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at Florida State University, where I contribute to the education and training of future professionals.
